JJ Clark: Vulcan Materials Company
JJ Clark is a two-time concrete truck rodeo winner who began driving a concrete truck for 32 years and loves to make people laugh. In 1976, JJ was employed as a driver for the Dekalb County Sanitation Department when a strike occurred. A few of his fellow employees went to work for Tucker Concrete Company (TUCCO) and convinced him to apply as well. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Clark currently works at Vulcan Materials, which he describes as a family-oriented company that provides good, rewarding jobs. Over the course of his time at Vulcan, he has worked in every area of the plant except for the shop. On a typical day, he monitors and maintains the quality of material coming in, as well as manages all the duties of the yard to ensure that everything runs smoothly and is taken care of. The most challenging aspect of his job is when things change at the last minute and he must make quick adjustments while still guaranteeing quality, which he asserts “Thankfully, doesn’t happen very often.” According to Clark, he most enjoys being independent and taking full responsibility of his work. He states, “I enjoy the freedom of handling it by myself.”
If Clark could give advice to someone coming into the industry, he would emphasize the importance of choosing your career carefully and being dedicated to what you do, treating other people the way you would like to be treated, and always being careful and safe. His greatest wish would be for people to appreciate the work that he, and Vulcan as a whole, accomplishes on a daily basis.
