On May 11, The Georgia Ready Mixed Concrete Association (GRMCA) gathered with Athens Area Habitat for Humanity, local lawmakers, and the Moody Family in the Stonehenge Neighborhood of Athens for a groundbreaking ceremony. Once completed, this will be the first Habitat Home in the Southeast constructed with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs). This building technique involves foam insulation blocks that are stacked together like Legos™. Once assembled, concrete is poured throughout the stacked foam blocks creating a structure that offers resiliency, longevity, safety, and energy efficiency far beyond that of traditional wood framed homes.
Skyrocketing lumber prices and labor shortages have left builders scrambling to find alternatives to stick built homes. ICF systems are lightweight to handle and are much less labor intensive to install combing several trades into one step. The comparatively stable price of concrete now allows ICF homes to be built cost competitively.
Jimmy Cotty, Executive Director of the GRMCA, and Spencer Frye, Executive Director of Athens Area Habitat for Humanity, have been searching for the right opportunity to add ICFs to Athens Habitat’s portfolio. Spencer shared, “This is an amazing opportunity to see this incredible building technique that we are going to institute here in Athens for the future, but more importantly this is about Shaterica Moody and her family owning and buying their first home."
Since 1999, Athens Area Habitat has sponsored 18 other homes in the Stonehenge Neighborhood. Coined as the “Build with Strength Home,” this project is well supported by a variety of contributors who have teamed up to ensure a smooth construction process. Jimmy Cotty stated that the GRMCA is proud to be a partner on this project. “This home is going to be the most efficient, durable, and quiet home in this neighborhood. It will by far outlast all the other houses around it.”
